Observations and thoughts of a bird watching traveller

I recently travelled to the UK to spend two and half weeks with my daughter who was staying with family in a leafy suburb of Cardiff called Radyr.

Ever with a keen eye on the local bird life I found it surprising that the only birds I saw in their lovely big garden were huge black crows and striking magpies!

A visit by a White Swan
Late one afternoon we had a phone call from a concerned member of the public in Ardmore
‘Piedy the Magpie’ told by Sue Buchanan – volunteer and victim
Our story is about ‘Piedy’ our resident magpie who sadly, is permanently incarcerated due his dislike for everything that moves! At the time of writing this story we all felt that Piedy had to be female but we now believe Piedy to be a male. Of course he still loves his mum – Mandy!
Henry the White Faced Heron
Henry came into care as a young fledgling after being found on the side of the road. Although there were no visible injuries we believed he had been hit by a car and had suffered some nerve damage as he was unable to stand or move his legs.
Ika the NZ Dotterel
Two dotterel eggs were found on the Te Puru sports field in Beachlands just prior to a soccer game.
'Noopy' The Welcome Swallow
Noopy was a Welcome Swallow and she did just that welcomed all that came and gave a lot of pleasure to everyone who was fortunate enough to meet her.
'Bianca' The white Variable Oystercatcher
Bianca was a white Variable Oystercatcher hatchling that had been found abandoned in her nest.
